Shockwave Therapy

only availabe at Dromana Family Doctors

Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective treatment for long-standing Plantar Fasciitis, Achille's tendinopathy and other soft-tissue pathologies. The shockwave is a physical sound wave "shock,” not an electric shock. This mode of treatment helps re-activate the body's healing response when conservative treatments have failed. Some patients experience mild discomfort during this process due to the repetitive micro-trauma involved. No down-time is required during a shockwave therapy treatment plan.

Usually between 3-5, weekly sessions are required to have a long-lasting, therapeutic benefit.

FAQ's...

How long does the treatment last?

Approximately 2000 shocks are administered per treatment area (the duration of which is approximately 4-6 minutes). Some conditions require more shocks and therefore a longer session, depending on severity and chronicity (how long the condition or injury has existed).

How many treatments will I need?

Normally, 3 to 5 treatments are necessary at 5 to 7 day intervals.

Does the treatment hurt?

Some patients feel uncomfortable during the session in the short-term. However, most patients are able to tolerate the treatment. If you cannot tolerate the treatment, your podiatrist can decrease the intensity and the frequency of the administered shocks so that the session is tolerable.

What should I do if I am in pain after the treatment?

The shockwave treatment will trigger an inflammatory response, which is the body's natural process of healing. For this reason, do not use anti- inflammatory medications. The pain should subside within 24 hours. Use paracetamol only if required.

What if I feel fine after the treatment?

Even if you feel fine, we recommend decreased activity for 48 hours following the treatment.

What is the success rate of this kind of treatment?

A successful treatment is considered if the patient has at least 75% reduction in pain within 3 months. Worldwide, success rates are approximately 70-88%.

What if it doesn't work for me?

Although the short-term effects alone are exceptional, the long-term benefits of this treatment may have a delayed effect of up to 3 to 4 months. If after this time there has not been any marked improvements, a referral to a sports physician would be indicated.
